NEED TO FEED FOOD DRIVE

Cultivating Change, One Meal at a Time

The Need to Feed Initiative is a powerful response to the growing demand for accessible food in our community. Y&E has partnered with generous retailers like Walmart and Sam’s Club, alongside fresh produce grown in Y&E’s very own community garden, to provide consistent support to families facing food insecurity. In these challenging times, this food drive has become a crucial resource, ensuring that children, seniors, and families can count on nutritious meals each week.

Every partnership, every garden harvest, and every volunteer effort combines to build a community where no one has to wonder where their next meal will come from.

Together, we're working to end hunger.

HOW IT STARTED

From Surplus to Service:
Need to Feed’s Journey

The Need to Feed initiative began when Courtney Johnson, Y&E’s founder, noticed his local Walmart discarding perfectly good food due to limited storage space. Driven by a commitment to his community, Courtney spent weeks speaking with Walmart staff, and his persistence paid off—he convinced them to let him collect the surplus food to distribute throughout the neighborhood. Today, through partnerships with several local retailers and fresh produce from Y&E’s community garden, Need to Feed holds a weekly food drive that provides essential groceries to families, bringing hope and nourishment to those in need. As the initiative expands, Y&E is working to establish a new warehouse to support storage and streamline distribution, enabling Need to Feed to make an even greater impact on community food security.

HOW WE DO IT

With You, We Go Further

Garden Center
Y&E’s garden center has become a cornerstone of our Need to Feed initiative, providing fresh, locally-grown produce to families in need. We’re excited to expand this program even further with the development of Granddaddy's Garden Spot, which will allow us to grow more produce and offer even greater support for those who rely on us. This expansion means healthier, fresher food options for more families, right from our community’s soil.
Donors & Volunteers
None of this would be possible without the dedication of our incredible volunteers and the generosity of our donors. Their hard work and support keep the Need to Feed initiative running smoothly, helping us expand our reach and bring relief to even more families. As we look to the future, we know we’ll continue to rely on this community-driven spirit and the kindness of those who support us. It’s their ongoing commitment that allows us to grow, innovate, and serve.
Partners
Our partnerships with Walmart, Sam’s Club, Target, Starbucks, Schnucks, and many others have been transformative, empowering us to serve the community in ways we once only dreamed of. Through their generous contributions of surplus food and essential resources, these partners ensure that families never have to worry about where their next meal will come from. With this invaluable support, we’re bringing food security to our neighbors, offering comfort and stability when it’s needed most.

THE BACKSTORY

Turning Waste into Hope: The Start of Y&E's Food Drive

Courtney Johnson noticed something troubling at his local Walmart—perfectly good food was being thrown away simply because there wasn’t enough room for it. Determined to make a change, he spent six weeks persistently asking why this food was going to waste and how it could be put to better use. Through his unwavering dedication, Courtney finally convinced Walmart to allow him to give the surplus food back to the community instead. Since then, with the help of Y&E’s incredible volunteers, this weekly food drive has served over 30,000 people, turning what was once waste into a vital resource for those in need.
